Big Bug on Emma's Head

So we woke up at around 7:20 just like any other morning. The only difference is, that we found our little baby in her crib with a huge bug on her head. Just see for yourself. :-)

Ryan took these pictures just today... Enjoy!

So the little one is starting to get on her knees now. I think we might need to child proof the house before she starts crawling.

And this is our little ladybug. A toto je zase nasa mala lienka.

Las Vegas

So, I will be going to Las Vegas in December. There is an International Conference on Information Systems held at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas. I am pretty excited and ready to get out of Pullman, although a little intimidated by the big conference. We are trying to look for the best hotel to stay in. I don’t think we will be staying at the Luxor hotel in Las Vegas although we might try to go see some entertainment shows on the strip.

One thing that amazes me about this trip, is that the Venetian has no internet service. So I am going to the most prestigious conference on information systems in the world and one of the most popular hotels in Vegas does not provide internet service for the conference. Seriously, where is Quest DSL, Adelphia, Verizon or anybody else? And no corporate sponsors from the information systems industry. I can’t believe that Microsoft, Cisco Systems, Dell, IBM, HP, Apple, Sony and others are not a part of this too. We are trying to bridge the world of academia with the world of the practitioners, yet we don’t even care about the practitioners to invite them to the conference? And we don’t even care enough to get some sponsorship from them? Or we don’t even care enough to provide internet service. I think it is a shame that we charge people 400 dollars to get into the conference, when there are ways to raise money by asking corporate sponsors for money. Well, that is my opinion only…

However, I was going to write this post too get ideas from those of you who have been to Vegas about the shows that are worth seeing, or hotels that are worth staying at when you are on a budget. Or would you just go gamble in a casino? I would appreciate your advice.

Emma's 6-month check up (EN, SK)

Potom nam ju odmerali a odvazili. Nasa "mala" Emma ma 71 centimetrov a vazi cez 9 kil (9143 gramov). Co to znamena v porovnani s ostatnymi detmi?
Tri do kazdeho stehna. Pre tych, ktorych by to mohlo zaujimat (starka), Emma dostala: Hepatitis B; Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (DTaP), Haemophilius influenzae type b (Hib), Polio, Pneumococcal Conjugate (PCV), Influenza Vaccine.

English
Today, Emma had her 6 month well child check up. Dr. Adkins just kept saying how beautiful she was and how much she smiled and how perfect she was. Then they took her measurements. So our "little" Emma is 28" long and weighs 20 pounds and 2.5 ounces. What does that mean compared to other kids? In both height and weight, Emma is off the charts which converts to about the 99th percentile. So I am wondering if one day we won't have a big basketball player out of our little Emma. I also just realized that she is illegal now, because her car seat only goes up to twenty pounds so we better install a new one into the red Ford Contour or the Honda Civic.
Well, that was nothing, weighing was not that big of deal, except that she could barely fit on the scale. But then, she got her shots... all six of them. Three in each leg. For those of you who might be interested in what she got (Molly), they were: Hepatitis B; Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (DTaP), Haemophilius influenzae type b (Hib), Polio, Pneumococcal Conjugate (PCV), Influenza Vaccine. Poor girl, she did not like it too much, but she was very brave.
Ok, I better study now, but that is the update for the day.

A story written by my mom (English & Slovak)

Doll
The living room was filled with anger and tension. Light, and loud conversation were flowing into the child’s room through the glass door. The little girl closed her eyes and hugged her doll very tightly. Her parents fought a lot lately. The child, laying in bed, quietly whispered to the doll, “Don’t worry, don’t worry” caressing her hair just like always when she herself was afraid. Maybe the parents finally calmed down; maybe the child fell asleep from being tired. She didn’t hear it when her mother quietly came into the room and took the doll she was embracing. “I can’t look at that doll anymore” said the woman to her husband, when she came back to the living room. “I am ashamed in front of our friends when she brings her into the room. What are they going to think about us, that we don’t have enough money for a new toy?” -and she threw the doll in the corner of the room.

Babika
Obývacia izba bola plná hnevu a napätia. Cez sklenené dvere prenikalo do detskej izby svetlo a hlasný hovor rodičov. Dievčatko malo zažmúrené oči a k hrudi si tuho tislo bábiku. " pohodila bábu do kúta.

My Mom

So I said that I would not post anything new tonight... ok, I lied. I was reading my mom's blog and yet once again I was amazed at her incredible ability to write that made me realize the strength of words. I wanted to share with you one of her stories but I could not find one that I could translate without it loosing so much meaning. So all I can say is that I admire my mom and hope that one day she will become the most widely read author in the world. If you speak Slovak, go check out her blog, I promise, it is worth it.
